Jimmy Lai and six other activists found guilty over peaceful protests in Hong Kong

Seven pro-democracy activists, including media tycoon Jimmy Lai and “Hong Kong’s father of democracy” Martin Lee were found guilty of organizing and taking part in peaceful protests that took place in Hong Kong on August 18, 2019. The decision followed a 20-day trial in February and March.

After a year-long wave of pro-democracy protests, Beijing is increasingly targeting the city’s rights and freedoms. Earlier this week China passed extensive changes to Hong Kong’s electoral rules, which will allow prospective MPs to first be vetted by a pro-Beijing committee.
