Forum 2000 - Dalai Lama and Joan Baez in Prague

Event

Less than two months after the end of the biggest Forum 2000 conference thus far, the date of the next, seventeenth annual, traditional discussion meeting of distinguished media personalities is already known. In 2013, the Forum 2000 conference will be held on 15-17 September, not only in Prague, but also in other Czech towns and cities. The possibilities of also extending the conference to Budapest, Vienna, and again to Bratislava are also under negotiation.  One of the first confirmed conference participants is His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who in the summer of this year became a member of the Forum 2000 Foundation's International Advisory Board alongside the Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi, the former South African President Frederik Willem de Klerk, the former Polish dissident Adam Michnik, and other personalities. "I know that the Forum 2000 will keep up the spirit of Václav Havel's tireless work with renewed vigour and determination. I look forward to working in close cooperation with the Forum 2000Foundation towards building a more peaceful, open world," the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Tibetan spiritual leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, wrote in a letter to Forum 2000.

In connection with today's anniversary of the death of Václav Havel, the Forum 2000 Foundation is joining in with the commemorative events of the Vize 97 Foundation and the Václav Havel Library as well as the Short Trousers for Václav Havel campaign. Besides this, Forum 2000 has invited the American folk singer Joan Baez to Prague. The first edition of the Czech translation of her memoir And a Voice to Sing With has just been published by the Galen publishing house. In view of her longstanding friendship with Václav Havel, Joan Baez attended the opening ceremony of this year's 16th annual Forum 2000 conference. On Friday, 21 December, at 4 p.m. in the Krásný ztráty café (Náprstkova 10, Prague 1), the Forum2000 Foundation is also hosting a debate with Joan Baez focusing on her experiences in the field of human rights and political activism. "Maybe I should confide in my Czech readers - who hold this volume in their hands - about my relationship with the Czech Republic, the former Czechoslovakia, Václav Havel, and non-violent civil disobedience. I love returning to Prague, which I think is the most beautiful of all cities. I love returning to the great people who live here," Joan Baez writes in her foreword. The debate will be moderated by the editor of the Czech edition of her book Jiří Černý.

The debate is by invitation only. If media representatives are interesting in attending the event, please send an email with your contact details to:filip.sebek@forum2000.cz no later than 3 p.m. on Thursday, 20 December. If you do not receive an answer rejecting your request due to limited capacity, you can consider your attendance to have been confirmed.
